Two dead, one airlifted to hospital after crash on Highway 2 in Wayne County, Iowa

A head-on collision on Highway 2 at County Highway S40 resulted in two fatalities and one injury on the morning of July 9, 2024, according to the Iowa Highway Patrol.

At approximately 7:32 a.m., a 2010 Ford F150 driven by Adrian Cooper Boggs, 19, of Humeston, Iowa, was traveling east on Highway 2 when it crossed the center line on a curve and collided head-on with a westbound 2012 Toyota Camry. The driver of the Toyota, Larry Gene McDanel, 84, and his passenger, Linda Darlene McDanel, 70, both of Exline, Iowa, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both Larry and Linda McDanel were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Their bodies were transported to the state medical examiner’s office by Thomas Funeral Home.

Adrian Cooper Boggs, who was also wearing a seat belt, sustained injuries and was airlifted to Mercy Des Moines by Mercy One Air. The Iowa Highway Patrol confirmed that his life was saved by the seat belt.

The vehicles were towed from the scene by Rod’s Towing. The crash was investigated by the Iowa Highway Patrol, with Troopers Lefler and Rykhoek assisting.
