Springfield business owner indicted for illegal firearm possession

A Springfield, Missouri, business owner was indicted by a federal grand jury for illegally possessing a firearm.

Garry Earl Shidler, 49, was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield, Missouri. Shidler is the owner of Chappell’s Tire, a business located in Springfield.

The indictment alleges that on December 18, 2023, Shidler was in possession of a Colt 5.56-caliber semi-automatic rifle equipped with a 30-round magazine.

Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing any firearm or ammunition. Shidler has a criminal history that includes three prior felony convictions for burglary, as well as additional felony convictions for forgery, tampering, and trafficking in stolen identities.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael S. Oliver. The investigation was conducted by the Springfield Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
