After more than two decades of service, Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox officially retired on September 1, 2024. In a heartfelt message, Cox expressed his gratitude to the community for their friendship and support throughout his tenure.

Cox began his career as the Livingston County Sheriff on January 1, 2001. At the time, the department faced significant financial challenges. Deputies were paid $17,000 yearly, detention officers $16,000, and dispatchers $15,000. The lack of funding extended to equipment as well; deputies and the sheriff were required to use their personal vehicles as patrol cars, with the county providing minimal resources such as lights, radios, and possibly a handgun. Staff training was limited, and the jail was severely understaffed, leading to safety concerns.

Despite these challenges, the community rallied to support a law enforcement tax, providing the department with much-needed financial assistance. Over the years, this support allowed for gradual improvements, including better training and equipment for deputies and staff. The jail was closed over a decade ago, a decision that has since saved taxpayers millions of dollars in operational costs.

Cox expressed pride in the progress made during his time in office, noting the improved funding and stability achieved with the help of Presiding Commissioner Ed Douglas, the County Commission, and other elected officials. “We are now much better funded, and the commission actually has a reserve, no longer living broke from year to year,” Cox said.

As he steps down, Cox leaves the department in the capable hands of Dustin Woelfle, who officially became the Livingston County Sheriff on September 1, 2024. Woelfle, who has served in various roles within the sheriff’s office, is praised by Cox for his intelligence, dedication, and innovative ideas to enhance the department’s services.

Cox concluded his message with a note of thanks to the community for their past, present, and future support, offering a blessing for their safety and well-being.
