Scott Duane Burkeybile obit photoScott D. Burkeybile, 54, a resident of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Mill Grove, Missouri, passed away at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr. Burkeybile was born on August 16, 1969, in Trenton, Missouri, the son of Gary D. and Mary F. Coe Burkeybile. He graduated from Princeton R-V High School in Princeton, Missouri, in 1987. In 1995, he obtained his License in Practical Nursing from Mercy College of Health Sciences and pursued a career working in long-term care facilities in the Des Moines area. He cared deeply for the residents, treating them as if they were his own family, always striving to ensure they received the best care possible.

From a young age, Scott knew he wanted to work with the elderly. At just 10 years old, he would go around town checking on the elderly citizens of Mill Grove. As soon as he got home from school, he would start making his rounds. If he couldn’t be found at home, his family always knew which houses to check. He influenced many people in their choice to pursue a career in nursing. Even in the last few weeks of his life, he continued to encourage the younger generation to pursue their dreams.

Scott always looked forward to family vacations, which were a yearly tradition. He loved to travel and experience different places, but most of all, he cherished spending time with his family and making new memories.

He is survived by his parents, Gary and Mary Burkeybile of Princeton, Missouri; one sister, Erin Coin (Mike Francis) of Princeton, Missouri; a niece, Kelsie (Garrett) Lowe of Trenton, Missouri; nephews, Hunter Coin of Princeton, Missouri, and Lane and Sam Burkeybile of Centerville, Iowa. He is also survived by a great-niece and great-nephews, Owen, Emma, and Jett Lowe of Trenton, Missouri; a special friend, Andrew Cleary of Des Moines, Iowa; four aunts, Kay Dinsmore and Patty McKinney of Princeton, Missouri, Alice (Larry) Ishmael of Avalon, Missouri, and Marsha (Eddie) Smith of Winston, Missouri; one uncle, Leroy (Jessie) Burkeybile of Trenton, Missouri, along with many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Todd Burkeybile, paternal grandparents, Oren and Leona Burkeybile, and maternal grandparents, John Coe and Leona and Sam Kemp.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Spickard Christian Church, Spickard, Missouri. The burial of cremains will follow in Half Rock Cemetery, northeast of Spickard.

Family visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorials to the John Stoddard Cancer Center in Des Moines, Iowa, or Half Rock Cemetery may be left with Slater-Neal Funeral Home, Trenton, Missouri.
