The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant following a scam call received on Tuesday from a restricted number. According to Sergeant Dustin Woelfle, the caller requested to speak directly with the sheriff and was transferred to the sheriff’s office phone line.

During the call, the scammer claimed to have prior business partnerships with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and alleged that the office had recently purchased items from his “company.” In an attempt to further engage the sheriff’s office, the caller offered to provide a couple of coffee machines for free if the office agreed to purchase “drug testing” kits from the company, purportedly located in Texas.

Sergeant Woelfle noted that the sheriff’s office regularly uses and orders drug tests, which initially piqued his interest in learning more about the caller’s offerings, however, when Woelfle inquired about the company’s website to review the products while on the call, the scammer pretended to consult with an associate and then abruptly disconnected the call.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office advises residents to be cautious of unsolicited calls, especially those asking for personal or financial information or making offers that seem too good to be true. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious calls to local law enforcement to help prevent similar incidents.
