Sarah Elder, a 100-year-old Trenton resident, passed away at 2:55 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Slater Neal Funeral Home in Trenton. Burial will follow in Rural Dale Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to Rural Dale Cemetery and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home.
Sarah Isabelle Elder was born on March 23, 1924, in Trenton to John Harvey and Harriett Eleanor (Haynor) McGuire. She graduated from Trenton High School with the class of 1943. On July 5, 1946, she married Herman L. Dunkin Jr., and they had three children: John Leslie, Janice Lee, and Jeri Lynn. On August 15, 1966, she married Alvin “Bud” Elder in Trenton. Sarah and Bud then moved to Brimson, where they lived until Sarah moved back to Trenton in 2012. Bud preceded her in death on April 22, 1998. Sarah worked at Schlarb Dry Cleaners for many years. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church in Davenport, Iowa, and attended the Brimson Baptist Church until its closing.
Surviving relatives include her son, John Dunkin, and his wife, Connie, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; her daughter, Jeri Roberts, and her husband, Wesley, of Trenton; and a stepdaughter, Sue Stockman of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Dawn, Daniel, Robyn, Melissa, Tara, Clifford, and Leslie Ann; one step-grandchild, Darrin; and many great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Those preceding her in death include her parents; her husband, Bud; her daughter, Janice Bain; her son-in-law, Billie Bain; her stepdaughter, Billie Read; her stepson-in-law, Robert Read; her brothers, John, Samuel, Homer, George, and Franklin McGuire; and her sisters, Martha Hayes, Nellie Hayes, Ruth Veach, Abby Broyles, Frances McGuire, Judy Billingsley, and Mildred McGuire.
