Poplar Bluff man drowns in Current River near Doniphan on Sunday

A drowning incident occurred on Sunday afternoon on the Current River near the Current River Bridge in Doniphan, Missouri, resulting in the death of a 47-year-old man from Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 4:10 p.m. Edward D. Neal, a swimmer from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, was reported to have begun struggling in the water and became unconscious shortly afterward. Emergency responders transported Neal by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

Neal was pronounced dead at 5:18 p.m. by Dr. Guthikonda at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that Neal was not using a flotation device at the time of the incident.

This marks the third drowning incident in Troop E’s jurisdiction for the year 2024. 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by Corporal K.L. Huggins and Corporal M.L. Schlief.
