Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal and contagious condition affecting white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family. The disease poses a significant threat to Missouri’s deer population, hunting culture, and economy. CWD was detected in Grundy County during the 2023 deer season, raising concerns among local hunters and landowners.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), properties within approximately two miles of the area where CWD was detected are classified as part of the Grundy CWD Core Area. If you own land within this area, you are encouraged to participate in efforts to manage and slow the spread of CWD. The involvement of both hunters and landowners is crucial to protecting Missouri’s deer population from this disease.

To provide more information and encourage community participation, the MDC will hold a public meeting for landowners in the Grundy CWD Core Area. This meeting aims to educate attendees on CWD and discuss how hunters and landowners can contribute to disease management efforts.

The meeting is scheduled for September 4, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Laredo School gymnasium, located at 106 W Main St., Laredo, MO 64652. Landowners in the core area are invited to attend and learn more about how they can help in the fight against CWD.

For additional questions, Nathan Hubbard, an Ecological Health Specialist, is available for contact at Nathan.Hubbard@mdc.mo.gov or 660-785-2420.

More information about CWD and ongoing management efforts can be found on the MDC website.
