Man drowns at Smithville Lake while attempting to rescue child

A man drowned on Saturday at Smithville Lake while attempting to rescue a child who had drifted away from a boat.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that David G. Moore, 66, of St. Joseph, Missouri, drowned at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Crows Creek Cove. Moore was loading children onto a 1999 Nova Runabout when one of the children began to drift away from the boat. Moore dove into the water to retrieve the child but did not resurface.

The incident occurred while the boat was stationary, and Moore was not wearing a flotation device at the time. 

Moore’s body was later recovered and transported by Forensic Medical of Kansas to Forensic Medical.

Several members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in the response, including Sergeant C. W. Hoff, Corporal A. B. Ward, Trooper R. W. Garrett, Trooper S. R. Peterson, Corporal D. R. Becker, Corporal B. V. Cole, Trooper C. W. Norris, and Corporal C. D. Moeller.
