Man drowns at Golden Eagle Lake while swimming to shore

A man drowned Saturday evening at Golden Eagle Lake in Montgomery, Missouri. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. as reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

William R. Hitzemann, 45, of Weldon Spring, Missouri, was attempting to swim to shore from a vessel when he became distressed and was unable to make it to the shore. Hitzemann was not wearing a flotation device at the time of the incident.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Hitzemann was assisted by Sergeant N. J. Borgmeyer and Corporal T. W. O’Brien, along with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. Despite the assistance, Hitzemann could not be rescued in time.

Hitzemann was pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to Schlenker Funeral Home.
