Liberty Utilities is replacing the aging natural gas infrastructure in Trenton. The project is expected to last until early fall. The company, formerly known as Empire, reports the maintenance will improve the delivery and reliability of natural gas service for its customers.

A map of the project on the gas company’s website (you may also see the map in a graphic below) shows the work area is mostly west of the railroad tracks on 10th Street to Grant Street, south to Ninth Court, east to Olive, south to Eighth Street, west to Haliburton Street, and southwest on Pleasant View Avenue. The work area also goes northwest on Sixth Street, north on Wiggins Street, west on 10th Street, north on Hall Street, west on 13th Street, north on Norton Street, west on 18th Street to Moberly Street and east to Pleasant Plain, south to the end of Pleasant Plain, east to Princeton Road, south and east to Shanklin Avenue, and south to 10th Street. Work east of the railroad tracks goes from 10th and Shanklin east to Highland Street, south to Eighth Street, and east to Kerfoot Street.

City Administrator Ron Urton says Liberty Utilities has mobilized vehicles, machinery, and supplies in the former Lakeview Inn parking lot.

The company reports crews will need to temporarily interrupt natural gas service as the project progresses and enter properties to turn gas appliances back on after maintenance is completed. The disconnection process is anticipated to last about three minutes to an hour. Crews will place door hangar cards on customer doors to notify them before the disconnection.

In some areas, crews will need to work and potentially excavate within or nearby customer residences. Some roads may be closed and traffic rerouted through an alternate area, but road closures are not anticipated.

The project includes 25,000 feet of plastic gas main replacing steel main added in the 1950s and 60s, which the company notes lessens the chance of corrosion and damage. The project is also said to include improved system mapping capability and natural gas flow and reliability as well as safer and quicker accessibility for natural gas crews.

Liberty is monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic, and employees and contractors are following health and safety procedures as they work.
