Hundley-Whaley Farm Field and Family Day set for September 4

Residents and visitors are invited to attend the Hundley-Whaley Farm, Field, and Family Day on Sept. 4, at 1109 S. Birch St., Albany. This free event, organized by the University of Missouri (MU) Hundley-Whaley Extension and Education Center, offers a diverse range of educational activities along with a complimentary dinner.

Jennifer Miller, director of the MU Hundley-Whaley Extension and Education Center, emphasized the event’s educational value, stating, “The evening will provide interesting and educational activities for all attendees.”

Registration begins at 4 p.m., with wagon tours commencing at 5 p.m. Attendees can choose from various educational tours and presentations. MU Extension livestock field specialists Shawn Deering and Jim Humphrey will discuss ways to improve forage systems and provide updates on Missouri PaddockTrac, an online tool for managing pastures. Brian Findley from Advanced Aerial Ag LLC will demonstrate how drones can enhance farm efficiency, and MU research specialist Terry Woods will explain the cultivation of different milkweed and nectar wildflowers in Missouri.

Another wagon tour will feature presentations by Kristin Rosenbaum, Corteva Agriscience field scientist, and Jake Young, technical product manager at NOVUS Ag. MU Extension state soybean specialist Andre Reis will offer insights into soybean research, while state crop pathologist Mandi Bish will discuss current crop diseases affecting Missouri.

The event will also cover various farm safety and health topics. Charlie Ellis, MU Extension agricultural engineer, will provide tips on improving preharvest safety. Licensed drivers can learn to safely back up a gooseneck trailer. Attendees can also gain valuable medical skills at the MU School of Medicine’s Mobile Sim unit, which includes advanced simulation equipment and facilities for hands-on training in CPR, Heimlich maneuver, and basic bleeding control, including tourniquet use.

Additional presentations will cover hydroponics by MU Extension field horticulturist Gwen Funk, black vultures, farm succession, and the use of soybeans as a food source. The event will also highlight the achievements of 4-H members and recognize Century Farms and Gentry County Extension Council members during a free awards dinner at 7 p.m.

Event partners include MU Extension, Albany Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Soybean Association, United Electric, Hall Bottom Seed, Corteva, Premier Ag, Seedway, MFA, and the Albany FFA chapter.
