The Labor Day holiday weekend is a time to honor the contributions of American workers. Missouri State Parks Director David Kelly encourages Missourians to unplug from their daily routines and consider camping at one of the state’s many parks.

Kelly noted that camping remains a popular choice for the Labor Day weekend. “I think systemwide, right now, we’re 85% occupied at all our campsites. We’ve got a few parks with some availability, but, you know, a lot of the premium sites and stuff are already booked. So, we’ve got a few opportunities if folks are still interested in getting out and camping this weekend,” he said.

Reservations can be made online at any time, while phone reservations are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. For up-to-date information on park availability, visitors can check the park and site status map on the Missouri State Parks website.

Camping in Missouri offers a chance to disconnect from everyday noise, with 41 out of the state’s 93 parks and historic sites providing camping facilities. According to Kelly, “Labor Day used to be kind of the end of our peak season, but the trends have changed. September and October are busy camping months for us. So, it’s kind of a start of our busy fall season because of the cooler weather, the fall colors.”

For those interested in camping beyond traditional tents, Missouri State Parks provide various options. Kelly highlighted the diverse offerings: “We’ve got cabins. We’ve got yurts. We’ve got camper cabins. We’ve got platform tents. You know, we’ve got full-service cabins up to Echo Bluff (State Park), which is kind of our resort park. So, some lodging opportunities for everyone.”

Additionally, Missouri is one of only seven states that offer free access to state parks. However, Kelly clarified, “You do pay for camping and lodging and historic site tours. Camping, you know, ranges from $15 for a basic site up to the upper $20s for a full hookup site. We do have firewood available at all of our campgrounds for purchase.”

With the fall season approaching, Missouri State Parks anticipate a busy few months filled with events throughout September and October. For more details on camping and lodging reservations, including same-day options, visit the Missouri State Parks website.
