Caruthersville man dies in backhoe crash with locomotive

A fatal accident occurred on August 20, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Gettings Lane in Hayti, Missouri, involving a 2018 John Deere 310 SL backhoe and an EMV SD70ACE locomotive.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash took place when the driver of the backhoe, Thomas B. Jackson, 37, of Caruthersville, Missouri, failed to yield to the oncoming locomotive, resulting in a collision. Jackson, who was the driver of the backhoe, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Brian Irions at 3:55 p.m.

The locomotive, driven by Nathan Sadler, 39, of Chaffee, Missouri, sustained extensive damage and was disabled at the scene. The backhoe was totaled and towed from the site by Ace Wrecker.

The incident occurred on a section of the Burlington Northern Railroad without a signal device.

This marks the 42nd fatality reported by Troop E in 2024.
