On August 8, 2024, at approximately 9:44 a.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a physical domestic disturbance at a residence on Highway 24 in rural DeWitt. The incident involved an out-of-control male who had assaulted family members and caused significant property damage. The suspect fled the scene before law enforcement arrived but returned while a deputy was present.

Upon his return, a vehicle pursuit ensued, however, due to adverse weather and road conditions, deputies lost sight of the suspect as he continued to drive recklessly. The suspect attempted to return to the original scene on foot, but a deputy was stationed there, ready to apprehend him. A foot pursuit followed, and with the assistance of a K9 unit, the suspect was located hiding in a tree line north of Highway 24, west of County Road 381.

The suspect, identified as Richard “Richie” Tietjens of DeWitt, was taken into custody at 12:52 p.m. and subsequently transported to a hospital for evaluation. A request for formal criminal charges has been submitted to the Carroll County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Chariton County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Brookfield Police K9 unit.
