The American Red Cross is partnering with Marceline Fire and Rescue and family and friends of Zach Cupp to host a blood drive in Cupp’s memory for the 10th consecutive year. Blood donations will be accepted at the Walsworth Community Center of Marceline July 31st from 8 to 3 o’clock.
Cupp died as the result of a vehicle accident in August 2012. He received several pints of blood during surgery after the crash.
His parents, Matt and Laurie Cupp, have organized the annual blood drive as a way to give back to the community. Nearly 1,050 units of blood have been donated in the last nine years, including 191 donations at last year’s drive.
Appointments for the blood drive July 31st can be made by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org, or calling 1-800-733-2767. Enter or mention sponsor code MarcelineFireDept. Appointments can also be made by enabling the blood donor skill on any Alexa Echo device.
The Red Cross reports it is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants, and elective surgeries rise. Anyone who attempts to donate blood will receive a Saint Louis Cardinals t-shirt while supplies last, will receive a $10 Amazon gift card code, and will be entered to win free gas for a year.
